Understanding the structure of abdominal muscles

The abdominal muscles are made up of multiple muscle groups, and we need to focus on these three to achieve a slim waistline:

The rectus abdominis, or abs, that runs vertically (the “six-pack” muscle)

The transverse abdominis that runs horizontally (sits in the lower abdomen)

The external and internal obliques (located on the sides of the abdomen and play a big role in determining waist size)

Exercise 1: Reverse crunch (with legs raised)

To save energy, it's best to start with the hardest exercise targeting the lower abs. The leg raise exercise is the most effective way to work those lower abs that are harder to get.

-Lie flat on your back on the floor with your legs together and knees bent.

-Tighten your core muscles.

-Use your lower abs to lift both legs off the ground.

-Raise your legs until your butt comes slightly off the floor.

If you want to make it more challenging, try straightening your legs and lifting them until your butt is higher off the ground to really work your lower abs.

Exercise 2: Crunch

Crunches are better than sit-ups as they can better target the upper abs and is safer for the spine. It’s also a relatively easy exercise to do, making it the perfect choice for beginners!

-Lie on your back with your knees bent and your lower back and butt pressed against the ground.

-Put your hands near your ears.

-Imagine squeezing your abs together and lift your upper body off the ground.

Tighten your abs.

Exercise 3: Russian twist

Many ab exercises only work in a straight up-and-down motion, so it's important to add some twisting movements to target the transverse abdominis and obliques on the sides of your waist.

-Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Lean back at a 45-degree angle.

-Lift your feet off the ground to stabilize your body and keep your balance. Place your hands together in front of your chest.

-Keep your legs stationary and twist your arms from one side to the other, trying to keep your spine straight.
